To wrap up a long week of basketball our ladies headed to Hagerstown to face the Grace Academy Knights. This would be the second meeting for the girls, and they knew to come ready for some tough competition. Grace had an age and size advantage; plus their coach had informed Coach Matthews that the Knights would be pressing throughout the game.
In the first quarter the ladies were getting good open shots, and keeping a tight and solid defense. They allowed the Knights only 7 points in the first quarter, sinking 6 themselves. However, a foul at the buzzer gave the Knights one additional point as they sunk a free-throw, giving them 8 points to start the second quarter.
As promised, though, the Knights ran a full-court trapping press in the second quarter, which resulted in many turnovers. This left our girls frustrated and trailing far behind the Knights going into the second half of the game, the score being 25-8.
The Knights came out in the second half and, like every other team the Warriors had played this week, hit three-pointer after three-pointer, making 7 in the third quarter alone! The score at the end of three was 45-16. With their lead, Grace put in their second string players. When playing girls their own age, the Warriors excelled, leaving the second string almost scoreless. The Warriors, on the other hand, scored 16 points in the second half. The final score was 49-24.
Emily Passarelli led the team with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 1 assist. Ashley Kelly was right behind her with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Emma Matthews had 4 points, 2 assists, and a board. Gabrielle Freese scored 2 points, pulled down 8 rebounds, and 1 block. Amanda Stewart pulled down 2 rebounds.
It was another tough loss but the Warriors played well and continue to improve as each game goes by. Great job ladies!
