The Warrior Ladies tipped off with the Mount Airy Christian Academy Lions Thursday afternoon. With Emma Matthews out due to a fractured foot and a sinus infection, the Warriors had 7 players. The Warriors didn’t have much of a warm-up either, with 4 of the 7 girls going to the wrong gym and the last girl walking in 2 minutes after the game had already started.
Our ladies were fast to sink the first basket and not only stuck with the Lions, but were only down by 3 at the end of the quarter, the score being 8-5.
The 2nd quarter went just as well, the girls making good passes, playing tight defense, pulling down rebounds, and getting many good looks to the basket. At the end of the half the Warriors were trailing 18-11.
In the second half, though, the Lions came out with a trapping press that turned the game in MACA’s favor. After a timeout, the Warriors were able to successfully break the press, but the MACA’s offense didn’t let up. The Lion’s got into some foul trouble, and by the 3rd quarter the Warriors were in the double-bonus, putting our ladies on the line. The girls converted many of the fouls to points, scoring 6 from the line. The score was 33-21 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
The Warriors worked the ball around MACA’s tough defense, but the Lion’s shots were sinking consistently and the ladies couldn’t make up the difference. The final score was 42-26.
Gabrielle Freese led the team with 11 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 1 assist, and a steal. Emily Passarelli had 5 points, 16 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 assist, and 2 blocks. Amanda Stewart had 8 points, 4 boards, and 5 steals. Priya Stepp contributed 2 points, 2 steals, and a board. Ashley Kelly had 6 rebounds, 3 steals, and 3 assists. Abby had 3 boards.
The girls might not have won, but they played hard and never gave less than 110%. Great job ladies!
