MACA - VB
The Frederick Warriors' Varsity Boys played against the Lions from Mt. Airy Christian Academy on January 25. From the beginning, the Warriors played a full court press which led to several points for the Warriors off of forced and unforced turnovers. The Warriors kept a lead of up to 8 points throughout the first half of play and finished the first half with a two point lead, 24-22. The second half was just as close with the Warriors losing the lead in the third quarter. They continued to battle back to hold a two point lead with less than a minute to go when Jacob Hughes was fouled. This put the Warriors in position to be able to take the game with a win from the foul line. Jacob calmly dropped both foul shots to make the game a two-possession game. During the next Lions' possession, Ben Cook forced another turnover and took the ball the length of the floor for a layup to increase the lead to 6 points. The Warriors finished out the game with another layup to make the final score 50-42.
Ben Cook led all Warriors with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Josiah Carstens added 11 points, going 3-for-3 from the foul line. Jacob Hughes added 7 points, also going 3-for-3 from the foul line. Matt Kelly led all Warriors with 4 steals and provided 6 points to the Warrior offense. Ben Carstens led all Warriors with 4 assists and 3 blocked shots. He added 4 points to the Warrior offense and pulled down 11 rebounds.
The Warriors practiced a variety of defenses during the game including 2-3 defense, 1-3-1 defense, full court press, man-to-man, box-and-1, and a new formation that was a cross between a box-and-1 and 2-3 defense. On offense, they have improved the quickness of their plays to the point where they are getting open layup opportunities more regularly.
With a close game throughput, the Warriors showed they could operate under pressure and never gave up momentum to the Lions. They out-rebounded, out-ran, and out-hustled the Lions throughout the game.
